the national “trouble will find me” 2013

The-National-Trouble-Will-Find

The National’s dark, brooding tales of suburban strife and existential terror sounds like the audio equivalent of sitting down in a well-worn leather chair in a very dark room with a glass of scotch in your hand. Their sound is rich and menacing, backed by the mumbling growl of lead singer Matt Berninger.

naam “vow” 2013

naam vow

In its totality, Vow is a flowing conceptual work best taken on as a whole, stylistically ambitious but without the so-often-corresponding pretense, and at a vinyl-ready 37 minutes, it’s best taken as a whole.

piano magic “heart machinery” (a piano magic retrospective, 2001-2008) (2013)

piano magic

The unveiling of this second volume of Piano Magic singles, EP cuts and sundry extra-curricular pieces comes with the news that the band – which began way back in 1996 – may have amicably called it a day, for at least an extended indefinite hiatus.

scud mountain boys “do you love the sun” 2013

jp0001 SMB

Do You Love the Sun is the first new Scud Mountain Boys album since Sub Pop released the critically-acclaimed Massachusetts in 1996.
Their latest offering features Joe Pernice’s inimitable marriage of exquisitely graceful vocals and a resigned tone that the NME (in a 9 out of 10 Massachusetts review) once described as “the golden voice of damaged, regret oozing from every word like wounded honey… rendering glorious the utter inevitability of failure.”

robsongs “essa grande falta de você” 2012

robsongs essa grande falta de você

The Robsongs project (Brazil) began back in 2008, initially under the name Minha Vida Nunca Foi um Picnic (My Life Was Never a Picnic). Back then it was a classic power trio format comprised of Robson Gomes, Alex and Augusto Medeiros Vitorino. After Alex’s premature death and several trials and tribulations, the group disbanded. Robson Gomes then decided to focus on the project and started writing new songs alone and recording them in his home studio. Released through The Blog That Celebrates Itself bandcamp.

the national gallery “performing musical interpretations of the paintings of paul klee” 1968

the-national-gallery-performing-musical-interpretations-of-the-paintings-of-paul-klee-cd-201-p

This superbly melodic and strange distillation of pop, folk, psych and jazz was inspired by the paintings of Paul Klee, and first appeared in 1968. Despite being credited to a proper band, it was in fact a studio recording overseen by the Cleveland-based team of jazz composer Chuck Mangione and local producer-arranger Roger Karshner, who called the songs ‘electronic paintings’. The album is presented here for the first time on CD, complete with liner notes and two rare bonus tracks from a pre-LP 45 credited to Bhagavad-Gita.

it’s us “don’t want your lovin’” 1966

it's us don't want your lovein'

One of the rarest records on the BFTG series, and containing an equally nice folk-ish b-side which is so far un-compiled. This is rather too folky to hit the top 50 on this list, but we estimate 5 or 6 copies only exist, one known to be vg+, another vg- with stained labels. Hear it on BFTG7. Hear the moody folk jangler flipside on Teen Blast USA Vol. 1. Included on the compilation “Back from The Grave, Vol. 7”.
